Artistic Director

Robin Phillips was born in Springs, South Africa and graduated from high school „Pro Arte” in Pretoria. He studied piano with Marian Friedman and harpsichord with Prof. Dr. med. Wim Viljoen at the University of Pretoria. In 1994 he moved to London to expand his piano studies with Prof. Peter Feuchtwanger. He founded a Lied Duo with the Canadian soprano Judith Henbest. Numerous concerts took them to South Africa, Great Britain and Canada. This work was the foundation for his great interest in the work with singers. In 2000 at the invitation of Kyrill Petrenko, he became solo répétiteur at the Südthüringisches Staatstheater Meiningen and coached Wagner’s „Ring des Nibelungen” in the legendary Mielitz/Petrenko staging. In 2006 he was appointed study director. In 2011 he had two musical productions at the University of the Arts in Zurich as well as an engagement at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, before moving to the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 2012 as Deputy Director of Studies. In Mannheim he coached productions such as the „Ring” by Freyer / Ettinger and founded the successful concert series „Liederabende in der Montagehalle” in 2013. For many years, Robin Phillips has held successful masterclasses for young singers in Canada, and was appointed as Musical Director of the newly founded International Opera Studio of the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 2016. He held master classes in South Africa before his start as the artistic director of the newly founded Opera Studio NRW in the season 2019.20..
